Petition

As part of our opposition to AstraZeneca’s planned for Cambridge animal lab/global HQ, we revised and relaunched our petition, urging AZ to listen to public concern.

The petition asks AZ to: drop the animal lab from their planned HQ; phase out all animal testing from their whole industry; tell us the fate of the beagles from their Alderley Park site or any other site; tell us if the rumours are true that the dogs will, at some point, be moved to Cambridge; tell us if they have plans to use any other animals besides rodents in this new lab

Thank you to everyone that signed and worked so hard to increase the signatures on our petition. The petition remains on change.org for people to keep signing/ sharing and re-sharing. Please continue to spread the word about the petition which raises urgent issues with AstraZeneca. The link to the petition is below.

Polling Day

We asked people to bear this in mind when they voted: The Green Party is the ONLY party that intends to do something about animal testing.

We provided you with a statement from Ellisif Wasmuth, Cambridge Green Party, “The Green Party supports The CAP Campaign in their opposition to AstraZeneca’s plans to house an animal lab at their planned HQ in Cambridge. We want to see an end to all forms of speciesism, including a ban on all experimentation and research which harms animals.”

We asked you to spread the word – the response was incredible with hundreds of you letting us know you agreed.

CAP in the news! (Article dated July 30th)

Our response to Cambridge University’s shameful partnership with AstraZeneca is covered in TCS’s article. We asked people to either click through to the article and leave a polite anti vivisection comment or post a polite comment on our page which we would post for them.

Thanks so much to all those that did this and/or spread the word – if you haven’t yet done so you can still rate the comments and/or post a comment of your own.

Virtual Vigil**

Our Virtual Vigil formed a part of our “Animal Testing Is Ineffective” Initiative ( see below*). The vigil was inspired by the court proceedings that continue(Sept 2015)  in Spain. Juan Santos Sierra died in Spain whilst participating in a clinical trial for AstraZeneca, testing a new drug (which had already been tested for safety using animal tests). His tragic death highlights the fact that animal testing is not effective.

Hundreds of campaigners attended (456) – following in silent reflection, posting messages, liking posts, sharing/inviting etc. As well as a wide range of grass roots groups the vigil attracted attention from Animal Aid, Lush Cambridge and Cambridge Green Party councilor Oscar Gillespie.

James, Lush Cambridge manager said, “Our thoughts are with the innocent victims. There should only be ‘1R,’ replace.’ ”
Cambridge Green Party councillor, Oscar Gillespie said, “ Scientific research sorely needs to wake up” and “be realistic about the usefulness of results from trials that use the wrong species.”
Animal Aid said, “The new AstraZeneca facility should not be a place where animals suffer in vain, but a progressive laboratory where cutting edge, human-relevant techniques generate real progress for patients.”

The full quotes and the messages can be seen here by clicking the “Messages for AstraZeneca Victims” tab on this website or on our event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/953842977994473/

“Animal Testing Is Ineffective” Initiative*

As well as the Virtual Vigil(see above**) CAP’s  initiative involved raising awareness about the issue by sharing articles to highlight the fact that animal testing is not effective.

For example: “Too often poorly designed projects – to test new medicines for strokes, cancer and other conditions – have produced meaningless results and wasted animals’ lives, the organisations have warned.”                http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/apr/18/animal-lives-wasted-in-drugs-safety-tests

The response to this “Animal Testing Is Ineffective” Initative was amazing with approx 1275 people getting involved, sharing, following and liking our online posts and in addition 456 people attending our Virtual Vigil!

Protest against AstraZeneca at B2B Exhibition – Thurs 24th Sept 2015

Representatives of CAP protested at the Cambridge B2B exhibition against Shaun Grady, AZ’s vice president for strategic partnering and business development.

Although we had all been registered and emailed tickets to attend the AZ speaker’s seminar all of us were turned away with no logical explanation!! (All placards, leaflets, etc had been left behind in cars out of sight and everyone was dressed conservatively).

Despite this setback we went on to demonstrate outside the hotel ( as we had planned to when the talk was over). Our chants were loud and  passionate whilst we leafleted and  urged companies not to be involved with AstraZeneca. Many took leaflets, looked at our placards and responded well to our demo.

Thank you to all that took part and those that sent us messages of support and helped spread the word.

Petition – “Email Emily Dawson – Agent of AstraZeneca, animal torturers!”

On 24th Sept, Emily Dawson, Operations Manager for Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce acted as an agent for AZ! She turned away members of CAP from the Cambridge B2B exhibition at which an AstraZeneca speaker was present. Ludicrously they had already been emailed tickets, were allowed to enter and book in and were given “visitor” labels! The petition urges Emily Dawson NOT to act as an agent for AstraZeneca again!

Hundreds of people either signed the petition or emailed her individually. Thank you to everyone that signed and worked so hard to increase the signatures on our petition. Although this event has ended the petition remains on change.org for people to sign/ share and re-share. The link to the petition and Emily Dawson’s email is below:

International Animal Rights Day event – Sat Dec 12th 2015

Our awareness raising event proved very successful! Although just a local event the turnout was amazing and so many leaflets were given out!

Committed activists in lab coats and lab masks held placards whilst passionately chanting and leafleting the public. Two brave volunteers enacted a giant mouse ‘injecting’ a vivisector. The idea was to help people consider the rights of the individual when the situation was the other way round. The event ended with a touching candle lit vigil in which a heart felt 2 minute silence was held.

Our aim was to raise awareness about the rights of animals, AZ and the cruel vivisection industry. The positive response from members the public showed us we had achieved this.

Thank you to all that took part and those that sent us messages of support and helped spread the word.

Demo: Animal tests, no progress! End the cruelty! Thurs 17th March, 2016
Supporters of CAP demonstrated against MedImmune, AstraZeneca’s global biologics research and development arm at the Cambridge Science Festival. The chanting was passionate and CAP leaflets were given out. Also leaflets with scientific facts against vivisection from highly respected national animal welfare organisations.

Thank you to all that took part and those that sent us messages of support and helped spread the word.

CAP’s speech at SPEAK’s World Week for Animals in Labs event, Oxford, Thurs 28th Apr 2016

Thank you SPEAK for an amazing event with fantastic speakers!                                                  Our speaker gave a quick speech in support of SPEAK’s campaign against Oxford University. Besides being guilty of cruel animal experiments themselves, Oxford Uni also has links with AstraZeneca. AZ is on their list of sponsors and partners and has also struck a deal with Oxford Cancer Biomarkers. This company is a spin out from Oxford Uni and still has very close ties with the university. To see the pic of our banner out in support of SPEAK’s invaluable work for the animals, please visit our Facebook page.

Thank you to all those that managed to go to the event and/or spread the word.

CAP reps at AZ AGM! Friday, 29th April, 2016

On Friday, 29th April, representatives of CAP attended AstraZeneca’s AGM in London. We asked questions based on CAP’s petition, asking AZ to drop plans for the animal lab and phase out all experiments on animals. Board members agreed to a response to our communications and were open to considering negotiation. We will be following this up and reminding them of their words.

It is also worth noting that currently the share price of AstraZeneca is at its lowest since the campaign began (Nov 2014). Also, their first quarter earnings have gone down since last year. AZ is at its weakest point….NOW is the best time to join our campaign against the Cambridge animal torture lab!

Thank you to all those that signed and shared the petition and/or sent messages of support.

Polling Day

We asked people to bear this in mind when they voted: The Green Party is the ONLY party that intends to do something about animal testing.

We provided you with a statement from Oscar Gillespie, Cambridge Green Party councillor, “The Green Party believe that animal experimentation is unnecessarily cruel, and want to invest instead in the many alternative methods of research which are actually based on human biology. I object to the AstraZeneca animal lab and support the CAP Campaign in opposing them.”

We asked you to spread the word – thank you to all those that did so and the people that let us know they agreed.

Response from AZ!

WELL DONE to everyone that sent an email to AstraZeneca asking for their overdue response to our communications! We had asked pressing questions about the new Cambridge lab and the possibility of negotiations. Although we had written to remind them of the agreement they made at their AGM, 19th April 2016, we still had heard nothing from them! So we asked our supporters to send AZ a polite reminder by email. Soon after this we received a reply! We are currently reviewing the letter they sent. We will post again to keep you updated. Thank you to all those that helped.

Stop the AZ Animal Lab! Online Actions from A-Z!

The new AZ animal lab is being planned for staff to begin moving in by the end of the year 2016! We are working full focus on stopping the animal lab and are planning a series of Stop the AZ Animal Lab events. This was the first of the full focus events to help stop the lab.

For this event, in order to inspire our thoughts, we went through letters of the alphabet (A- Z) to come up with ideas for as many online actions as possible. Eg. Action “P for petition” – we asked people to sign and/or share our petition urging AZ to listen to public concern.Eg. Action “E for email” – we asked people to send an email to relevant people, etc.

Thanks so much to everyone that joined/did actions/shared etc.

International Animal Rights Day event – Sat Dec 10th 2016

Part of our series ofStop the AZ Animal Lab” full focus events/actions to help stop the lab, this event highlighted the tragic plight of the animals destined for the AZ animal torture lab in Cambridge. We successfully achieved our aim of raising awareness about the rights of animals, AZ and the cruel vivisection industry with a positive response from members the public.

CAP supporters braved the driving rain and despite a national demo taking place in London still came out for our local Cambridge protest!

At the end of the event we had a candle lit vigil with wreath and flowers for the animals. We also paid tribute to Cambridge’s “legend”, veteran activist Joan Court (who recently passed away very peacefully) in recognition of her selfless work for the animals. Sue Hughes of Animal Rights Cambridge gave a very touching, passionate speech in tribute to Joan. A representative from the Rainbow Cafe came specially to light a candle for Joan and the animals. We were also sent touching messages from celebrity poet Benjamin Zephaniah, Sharon Kaur, Green Party Co – convenor and Lush Cambridge. Also, Sheila English from the Oxford SPEAK campaign shared a lovely memory she had of Joan<3

Thank you to all that took part and also those that sent us messages of support and/or helped spread the word.

Pics of the event can be found on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/theCAPcampaign/
